Advisor Nadduli Urges Museveni to Release Political Prisoners on Heroes Day

Veteran politician and Presidential Advisor Al-Hajj Abdul Nadduli has appealed to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to use this year’s Heroes Day celebrations as an opportunity to release political prisoners, arguing that many of their families contributed to Uganda’s liberation struggle.

Speaking from his home in Lusenke, Wobulenzi in Luweero District, Nadduli said the occasion should be used to promote reconciliation and forgiveness.

He cited biblical teachings, urging the President not to “let the sun set on his anger” and to show mercy to those imprisoned over political disagreements.

“The Bible teaches us not to let the sun go down while we are still angry. I urge the President to embrace that spirit and show mercy where it is possible,” Nadduli said.

Nadduli, who was among the National Resistance Army (NRA) fighters who participated in the bush war of the 1980s, said Heroes Day serves as a reminder of the sacrifices and loss of life endured during the struggle that brought peace and stability to Uganda.

Despite the painful memories of the war, he expressed satisfaction that the sacrifices made by the fighters helped rescue the country and lay the foundation for Uganda’s current peace and development. He called on all Ugandans to safeguard these gains.

The veteran freedom fighter also criticised the government’s handling of corruption, saying the President should move beyond rhetoric and take concrete action against corrupt officials.

“We have heard repeated promises about fighting corruption, but little seems to change. Those involved in corruption should be arrested and held accountable because corruption continues to undermine service delivery across the country,” he said.

He further condemned ongoing trade enforcement operations in various towns, arguing that authorities often evict vendors and traders without providing alternative locations, despite government funds being allocated for such activities.

Nadduli also congratulated recently sworn-in ministers, reminding them that the authority they now hold was made possible through the sacrifices of liberation fighters. He urged them to serve the country diligently and meet public expectations.

“The ministers who have just taken office should remember that the authority they enjoy today was earned through the sweat, blood and sacrifice of liberation fighters. They must serve the people faithfully,” he said.

Uganda commemorates Heroes Day annually on June 9, honouring individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the country’s development, including liberation war veterans, public servants, and citizens recognised for exceptional service.

Nadduli reiterated that Heroes Day should not only be a moment of celebration but also an opportunity for forgiveness and national reconciliation.

He added that he was recognised for his role in the liberation struggle and, in 2001, received the Nalubaale Medal from President Museveni in appreciation of his service to the nation.
